The McLaren 750S is striking in any colour, but this example arrived at Assetti Performance ready for a complete change of character.

Its bright light-blue paintwork was transformed into a deep satin blue using colour-change paint protection film. The result is a darker, more purposeful appearance, combined with a protective barrier over the original factory paintwork.

This was far more involved than simply applying film to the assembled vehicle. To achieve consistent coverage across the McLaren’s complex bodywork, the car was carefully stripped and individual panels were removed, prepared and protected away from the vehicle.

Every component then had to be carefully refitted. Here is how the transformation came together.

Stage 1: The Car Is Washed

Every high-quality PPF installation begins with preparation.

Before any components were removed, the McLaren 750S received a thorough wash to clear away road film, dirt and loose contamination from the bodywork.

Starting with a clean vehicle helps to protect the paint during disassembly and gives our technicians a clear view of every surface that will be worked on. It also lays the foundation for the more detailed panel preparation that follows.

Stage 2: The Car Is Stripped

With the McLaren clean, the detailed strip-down began.

Key exterior components were carefully removed to expose edges, returns and normally hidden areas that cannot be accessed properly while the car is fully assembled.

This stage is especially important during a full colour-change installation. The original light blue needed to disappear cleanly from the visible faces and edges of the vehicle, without obvious joins interrupting the new satin finish.

Removing the panels also allowed them to be handled individually, giving our installers greater control around the 750S’s intricate shapes and aerodynamic details.

Stage 3: The Panels Are Prepped

Once removed, each panel was cleaned and prepared individually.

The surfaces and edges were closely checked, with any remaining residue or contamination removed before the paint protection film was applied.

Not at all dissimilar to gloss or stealth PPF, preperation is absolutely essential to PPF. This helps the film bond correctly and creates a clean finish around corners and edges. On a colour change of this scale, accuracy during preparation has a direct impact on the quality and longevity of the finished result and prevents any lumps beneath the film caused by dust, fibres etc.

Stage 4: The Front Wings Are Protected and Reinstalled

The front wings were among the first major panels to receive the new dark satin-blue film.

Protecting them away from the vehicle allowed the film to be worked precisely around their sculpted contours and into the edges that would otherwise be difficult to access.

Once completed and inspected, the wings were carefully refitted to the McLaren. This marked one of the first moments when the new colour began to take shape on the vehicle itself.

Stage 5: The Doors and Rear Quarters Are Protected

Attention then moved along the sides of the 750S.

Sections of the doors and the whole rear quarters were protected in the new satin film, transforming some of the McLaren’s largest and most distinctive surfaces.

These areas demanded careful control of the film across deep curves, openings and complex transitions. Consistent tension and precise edge finishing were essential for retaining the sharp factory lines while producing an even satin appearance from front to rear.

Stage 6: The Bumpers Are Protected

The front and rear bumpers presented another technically demanding part of the installation.

Their intakes, openings, curves and aerodynamic forms required the film to be positioned and worked with exceptional care, our expert installer as determined as one can be managed to fit the whole splitter and bumper sections in singular pieces insisting that there must be zero visible lines on the vehicle.

Completing these components in satin blue brought the transformation together visually. It also added protection to areas of the car that are particularly exposed to stone chips, road debris and everyday wear.

Stage 7: The Car Is Built Back Up

With the major panels protected, the McLaren 750S was carefully reassembled.

Every removed component was returned to its correct position, with panel fit, alignment and the surrounding film edges checked throughout the process.

As the trim and bodywork went back onto the car, the result changed from a collection of individually protected panels into one cohesive transformation.

The dark satin blue now flows across the vehicle, while the gloss-black roof, wheels and exterior details provide a sharp contrast.

Stage 8: Ready for Handover

Following reassembly, the entire vehicle received a comprehensive final inspection.

The film edges, panel alignment and consistency of the satin finish were checked before the car was cleaned and prepared for its owner.

The completed McLaren within our dedicated photo bay looks dramatically different from the bright light-blue car that first entered the workshop. The new dark satin blue gives the 750S a more imposing presence, allowing its sculpted bodywork to catch the light in a completely different way.

Beneath that new finish, the original paintwork remains protected and preserved.

A New Finish Without Repainting the Car

Colour-change PPF offers far more than a visual transformation. It gives owners the opportunity to dramatically alter the appearance of their vehicle while helping to protect the factory paint from stone chips, light scratches and other everyday hazards.

Unlike a permanent repaint, the film can also be professionally removed in the future to reveal the original colour underneath.

On a car as intricate as the McLaren 750S, however, the quality of the finished result depends on what happens behind the scenes. Careful disassembly, individual panel preparation, precise installation and controlled reassembly were all crucial to making this satin-blue transformation feel complete.
